What is an Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

An ethnic rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to treat the nose’s functional and aesthetic concerns while maintaining the distinct structures unique to different ethnicities. The bridge width and shape, nostril size, and nose tip shape are just some of the features tweaked to meet the patient’s goals.

While cosmetic rhinoplasty typically focuses on achieving a more generalized aesthetic to improve facial symmetry, balance, and shape for a more proportionate look, ethnic rhinoplasty does so while preserving the cultural aesthetic. Whether your nasal structure falls into African, Middle Eastern, Asian, Hispanic, or something else, this procedure ensures you don’t have to sacrifice this distinct part of your identity.

How to Begin Your Ethnic Rhinoplasty Journey

If you are interested in getting ethnic rhinoplasty at Evan Jones, MD, you will need to schedule a consultation. During this appointment, you will meet Dr. Evan Jones, who will warmly welcome you into his private office, where you will discuss the procedure and your candidacy. Here are some things that you can expect during your consultation:

  1. In-depth discussion of the procedure and how he will maintain your ethnic features
  2. Discussion of your aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations
  3. Review of your medical history to ensure the procedure is safe
  4. A physical examination and analysis of your nose
  5. 3D imaging technology to create potential results

You may ask questions at any time to make sure you fully understand the procedure and how it can benefit you. You may also bring up other aesthetic concerns, and Dr. Jones can suggest additional procedures to combine with them.

When you and Dr. Jones agree that an ethnic rhinoplasty is the best procedure to achieve your aesthetic goals, he will set you up with a personalized treatment plan that includes pre-operative instructions, an expected timeline, and more.

What to Expect on the Day of Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgery

Your ethnic rhinoplasty surgery will take place at our surgical facility in Bala Cynwyd, outside the greater Philadelphia area, at the start of the Main Line. Dr. Jones will ensure you understand the expectations and review what will happen during the procedure, including anesthesia, whether the incisions will be open or closed, and the duration of the surgery.

Dr. Jones will perform an open or closed procedure, depending on your nasal structure and aesthetic goals. Open rhinoplasty allows Dr. Jones to access the underlying nasal structures with more precision. This technique is typically performed on individuals who require more complex procedures with significant alterations. Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the tissue between your nostrils (columella).

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nostrils, which avoids visible scars. This technique is used for less invasive or complex procedures that require only subtle adjustments. The recovery time is shorter, but it limits Dr. Jones’s ability to adjust the structure.

Ethnic rhinoplasty typically lasts 2-4 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. General anesthesia is administered, so you will need to be driven home by a friend or family member to help you recover.

Combining My Ethnic Rhinoplasty with Other Procedures

Philadelphia, Main Line, and Bala Cynwyd patients often combine their ethnic rhinoplasty with other procedures to achieve various aesthetic goals and avoid two separate, long recovery periods. You will have an opportunity to discuss which concerns you’d like to address during your consultation with Dr. Jones.

Chin Augmentation

Often referred to as a “profileplasty,” this combination ensures the modifications to the nose are in harmony with the lower third of the face, improving the overall facial profile. Only addressing the nose can make the proportions seem “off.”

Eyelid Lift

When you combine an eyelid lift, you can address the upper face and central face at once. This leads to a more balanced, harmonious, and rejuvenated appearance.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Recovery

Your Guide to Post-Ethnic Rhinoplasty Care

As you recover from your ethnic rhinoplasty, you can expect some swelling and bruising, which will be the most prominent in the first week. This can feel a little uncomfortable, but Dr. Jones will prescribe pain medication to help with this. Everyone heals at slightly different paces, but you can expect noticeable improvement after 2-3 weeks. You may need to wear a splint to support your nose as you heal; it will be removed at your first follow-up appointment with Dr. Jones.

Do not blow your nose for at least the first week, as this can damage the newly formed, delicate internal structures and significantly interfere with your recovery.

Avoid exercise for the first couple of weeks, as this will interfere with your healing process. You should also take a few days off work to give yourself plenty of time to recover. Most of the swelling will go away within 3-6 weeks, but mild swelling can continue for up to one year. This swelling will not be noticeable to others, but the results may not be finalized until then.

How Much Does an Ethnic Rhinoplasty Cost in Philadelphia, PA?

The cost of an ethnic rhinoplasty in Philadelphia varies by patient, depending on individual needs and goals. For instance, more complex procedures that require more anesthesia, take longer, and involve additional procedures will have higher costs. Additionally, more experienced plastic surgeons will charge higher rates. The best way to determine the cost of your ethnic rhinoplasty is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jones.
